Chagas disease, also known as American trypanosomiasis, is an illness caused by infected triatomine bugs, also known as kissing bugs1.

Impact

An estimated 10 million people are infected with Chagas disease2.

Geography

Chagas is found predominantly in Latin America.

Symptoms

According to the World Health Organization, there are two stages of Chagas disease. In stage one, symptoms include fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes, muscle pain, and chest pain.  Less frequent symptoms include skin lesions and eye swelling. In stage two, symptoms can include cardiac disorders and digestive and neurological alterations1.

Prevention

Chagas disease is preventable through vector control, such as the indoor spraying of houses and also through the use of an insecticide-treated bed net.
