Malaria & Vector-Borne Diseases

Malaria & Vector-Borne Diseases

Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease spread to people through the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito. In 2012, an estimated 207 million cases were reported1 and children under five are particularly vulnerable. Other vector-borne diseases include Dengue, Lymphatic filariasis, Chagas, Trypanosomiasis and Leishmaniasis. PermaNet® long-lasting insecticidal bed nets help prevent malaria.

Neglected Tropical Diseases

Neglected Tropical Diseases

Neglected tropical diseases, or NTDs, are common in low-income settings such as in parts of Africa, Asia and Latin America. Many are preventable and treatable, but are neglected because treatment and preventive measures are not available or affordable. NTDs include Elephantitis, Trachoma, Chagas, Guinea worm and others. LifeStraw® water filters and PermaNet® bed nets help prevent NTDs.

Climate Change and Health

Climate Change and Health

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), climate change affects the “fundamental requirements for health5,” including clean air, safe drinking water, food security, and secure shelter. Many deadly diseases in the developing world, such as diarrheal diseases, malaria, and dengue fever, have become worse due to climate change. Preventing malaria and waterborne diseases with PermaNet® nets and LifeStraw® filters helps reduce the negative impact of climate change.

Waterborne Diseases

Waterborne Diseases

Waterborne diseases are caused by drinking contaminated or dirty water. Contaminated water can cause many types of diarrheal diseases, including Cholera, and other serious illnesses such as Guinea worm disease, Typhoid, and Dysentery. Water related diseases cause 3.4 million deaths each year. LifeStraw® water filters remove the bacteria and pathogens that contaminate water to decrease the incidence of waterborne diseases.

HIV/AIDS

HIV/AIDS

HIV/AIDS is an extremely serious epidemic and the world’s leading infectious killer. Thirty-four million people have HIV/AIDS, approximately 1.8 million people die each year from it3. Because HIV/AIDS attacks the immune system, it makes people more susceptible to other diseases. Preventing malaria and waterborne diseases with PermaNet® bed nets and LifeStraw® water filters can keep people with HIV/AIDS healthier.

Food Security

Food Security

Today, there are about 870 million hungry people in the world, many who are suffering from the effects of malnutrition and most living in developing countries. There, farmers don’t often have the tools and resources to ensure food security for their families and communities. Products like ZeroFly® Livestock screen and ZeroFly® Storage Bags increase food security by keeping destructive flies away from livestock and postharvest commodities.

Malaria Research

IR Mapper is a tool that maps insecticide resistance. It consolidates reports of insecticide resistance in malaria mosquitoes onto filterable maps to inform vector control strategies.
