Hunger and Malnutrition

According to the World Food Summit of 1996, food security is defined as existing “when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life”1.

Impact

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, there is an estimated 870 million hungry people in the world.  This means that almost one in seven people are hungry2.

Geography

In developing countries, there are both physical and economic barriers to achieving food security. These barriers are made worse by health problems such as malnutrition and food-borne diarrhea1.

Prevention

Smallholder farmers in developing countries provide much of the food for their families and their communities. Measures to help these farmers increase productivity and reduce postharvest losses are important. This may include reducing illnesses and diseases that decrease livestock productivity by using insecticide treated screens to keep often deadly tsetse flies away from livestock. It may also include the use of insecticide treated storage bags to keep insect pests away from postharvest commodities.

Malaria Research

IR Mapper is a tool that maps insecticide resistance. It consolidates reports of insecticide resistance in malaria mosquitoes onto filterable maps to inform vector control strategies.
