New Database Helps Inform Vector Control Programs by Tracking Insecticide Resistance in Aedes Mosquitoes that Cause Zika, Dengue, Chikunguny and Other Mosquito-borne Diseases

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (August 20, 2017) – The IR Mapper online mapping platform has been expanded to include mapping of insecticide resistance in Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. These mosquitoes transmit Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya among other mosquito-borne diseases. By identifying areas where these mosquitoes are resistant to insecticides, the new database will help inform vector control programs on the most appropriate insecticides to use in specific regions.
Insecticide based vector control tools are an important component of preventing and controlling epidemics of mosquito-borne disease. Widespread insecticide resistance threatens the utility of these tools. The IR Mapper online database was created in 2012 to spatially display reports of insecticide resistance in Anopheles species that transmit malaria. The interactive online platform has been helping provide up to date information on where resistance has been found to help guide decision making.  

This month IR Mapper launched an additional interactive mapping platform that displays reports of insecticide resistance in Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. This marks an important step towards more proactive insecticide resistance management in Aedes arbovirus vectors, which are becoming increasingly problematic. Dengue incidence has increased in the past decade, with more than 2.5 billion people in over 100 countries at risk. Chikungunya cases have been reported in countries previously thought to be non-endemic, and 84 countries and territories have reported evidence of mosquito-borne transmission of the Zika virus.


IR Mapper’s Aedes platform is the most comprehensive database to map Aedes resistance. It consolidates published data on insecticide susceptibility and resistance mechanisms from 1965. To date, the Aedes database includes more than 5,000 field records from 831 localities in 59 countries and territories. 74% of the localities reported confirmed resistance to at least one of the classes of insecticides used in larval and adult mosquito control.
