Malaria and Vector-Borne Diseases: A Health Threat to the USA

    30 US States

Mosquito species that can carry malaria now reach across much of the country. Protecting our families, communities and workforce means staying ahead of these growing risks.

    2,000 Cases

Thousands of malaria cases are brought into the USA annually by travellers, incurring over $60 million in yearly treatment costs—a reminder that once malaria returns it's costly to contain.

    Returned in 2023

Eliminated from the USA back in 1951, locally acquired malaria resurfaced in 2023. Ongoing investment in innovation is essential to stamp out the disease everywhere and keep us all safe.

    9 New Pathogens

Vector-borne diseases in the USA have more than doubled in the past 20 years, increasing the risk of infections like dengue and West Nile virus. Since 2004, nine new pathogens, including Zika, have also been identified.
