PermaNet® Dual offers vital protection in areas where resistance is highest

26 September 2022 Kigali, Rwanda Today, Vestergaard reveals its first dual active long-lasting insecticide mosquito net, PermaNet® Dual to scientists and entomologists at the Pan African Mosquito Control Association (PAMCA). The new net has been developed in response to increasing insecticide resistance in malaria mosquitoes, one of the most concerning biological threats that could derail efforts towards malaria control and elimination.

PermaNet Dual combines two insecticides with two modes of action, chlorfenapyr and deltamethrin, and laboratory tests and experimental hut trials have proven dual active ingredient nets kill up to 70 percent more mosquitoes than the pyrethroid-PBO nets. It is the second dual active ingredient net on the market and opens up access to the implementation and distribution of new generation nets globally at an accelerated pace.

Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are a powerful and effective tool in malaria prevention but the disease, spread by the Anopheles mosquito, remains a major threat in the face of widespread pyrethroid resistance. PermaNet Dual is the company’s first dual active ingredient LLIN and laboratory tests and hut trials have proven it to be an effective tool in areas with high pyrethroid resistance in malaria mosquitoes.

Caroline Desrousseaux, Director of Sales and Marketing, Public Health says, “PermaNet Dual has been developed in response to the fast, increasing need for dual active ingredient nets, and the demand for Vestergaard’s innovation. Our first dual active ingredient net has been welcomed by donors as it supports the acceleration of the shift to more effective nets”.

LLINs are proven to be an effective way of preventing malaria and increased access to them has been a key factor in an estimated 69% of the averted malaria cases between the years 2000 and 2015. Since then, gains against malaria have stagnated with widespread pyrethroid resistance partly implicated.

The active ingredients in PermaNet Dual kill resistant mosquitoes more effectively by combining two different modes of action:

Chlorfenapyr, disrupts the cellular energy production in mosquitoes

Deltamethrin is a highly effective, fast acting pyrethroid insecticide

Ms. Desrousseaux said. “The introduction of PermaNet Dual opens up access to a new generation of mosquito nets with a higher bioefficacy against resistant mosquito populations, bringing vital malaria prevention to areas where resistance is highest.

“We are thrilled and ready to contribute to a significant acceleration of the deployment of dual active ingredient nets from 2023 onwards. At Vestergaard, we take pride in innovating as fast as the malaria vectors to stay on track for elimination. PermaNet Dual is the latest in our line of pioneering innovations, each one developed over time, in response to different requirements and designed with the end user in mind.” said Desrousseaux.

“PermaNet Dual, is ready for production now and, thanks to our state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities, we have the advantage of being able to be manufactured at scale, immediately,” she says.

The PermaNet portfolio was launched in 2003 with the release of PermaNet® 2.0, a pyrethroid-only LLIN specifically designed to protect against pyrethroid-resistant mosquitoes. In 2009, the company took another significant step forward by introducing PermaNet® 3.0, the first pyrethroid-PBO LLIN developed to combat growing pyrethroid resistance. Now, PermaNet Dual’s dual mode of action delivers better bioefficacy against highly resistant mosquito populations, bringing vital support in areas where resistance is highest.
